The questions on the quiz will simply be to tell about the natural vegetation, landforms, climate and the bodies of water in these two regions, followed by one question at the end that will ask them to apply the knowledge!
We will be having our first quiz in Social Studies on Friday! This is on the first two regions that we have studied, the Grassland and the Parkland. Students have all the information in a chart in their duotang, and have been studying at school as we create our plasticine maps. Students will be asked to bring their duotangs home in the evenings to study, but to remember to bring them back to school each day as they will need them here!
The questions on the quiz will simply be to tell about the natural vegetation, landforms, climate and the bodies of water in these two regions, followed by one question at the end that will ask them to apply the knowledge! Let me know if you have any questions! It has felt like a very busy week! Thank you to all the parents who came out to our liturgy yesterday. The students did a wonderful job! We spent a lot of time this week practicing in the gym for the liturgy, but we also finished reviewing chapter two in math (exploring numbers). Next week we will be jumping right into addition and practicing adding 4 digit numbers. In science we learned what transparent, translucent and opaque means, and we experimented with different objects to classify them as one of the three. We will be learning about reflection next week! In social we started working on our regions of Alberta map! We have learned about the grassland and the parkland and are starting on our plasticine art. The finished product will look something like this: To finish off our LA unit on self-monitoring strategies (what to do if you don't understand what you are reading), we made our own baseball cards to go with the book! Pictures to come when they are all laminated!
Here are some strategies we learned that students should be using: Just so everyone is aware, we have...
Gym: Day 2 & 4 Music: Day 1 & 3 Library: Day 3 Computers: Day 5 & 6 Just in case I forget to remind the students one day... :) Today we received our Math Focus student workbooks! These are books for the students to do more questions to practice what we have learned in school.
To start the year, I would like to have students work on the assigned pages during the week (the specific page and lesson will be written in our agenda message), and have them handed in on Friday so that over the weekends, I have the time to take a look at how they are doing. Each lesson has only a couple questions and should only take about 10-15 minutes at home. We worked through some pages today for lessons that we have learned prior to receiving the books. Some students may have brought this home with them today, if they didn't get a chance to finish. There may not be math pages to work on every day, so students will need to be responsible for knowing what they are expected to do and when. Next week we are going to start a home reading program. The students will not be taking books from school, but rather be keeping track of the time they spend reading at home. 20 minutes of reading every day can make a huge difference in the success of students. What they read is up to them, it could be anything from a book to a newspaper, the important part is that they are reading.
If you have time, have them read for 10 minutes out loud to someone, a parent, an older sibling, or maybe even a grandparent. Reading out loud helps with their fluency. They can also read for 10 minutes by themselves to make up the 20 minutes. If there is time, asking them questions about what they have read goes a long way to making sure they are understanding what they are reading! Happy reading! This week we finished reading a book called Catching the Moon: A Story of a Young Girls Baseball Dream. The purpose of reading this book, was to learn what to do when we are reading something and we don't understand. We read the book together, and stopped quite frequently to ask questions, look at the pictures, to re-read a part, or to even act out a scene, to make sure we understood what was happening in the book. Modelling is really important when it comes to these techniques, and I hope that the students saw some of these strategies at work, and can transfer them into their own reading!
Today we started learning about how our shadows move and change with the different time of day. It was a beautiful day to go outside and track the changes as the sun moved with sidewalk chalk! Students documented and took photos on the school iPads, and the hope is for students to create a video explaining why it happens!
This week we had the opportunity to go to the computer lab for the first time! There are a lot of great educational websites out there, so I thought it would be a great idea to share the ones we use with you as we go along. That way they can also be accessed at home!
Science: Experiment with Mirrors and take a quiz to test your knowledge: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/10_11/see_things.shtml Experiment with changing the size of shadows and take a quiz: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/7_8/light_shadows.shtml Social: We are starting to learn about the geographical regions of Alberta. This is a great interactive website that has a lot of information about the regions. Zooming in on Alberta's Regions: http://www.learnalberta.ca/content/sszi/en/index.html The T-Shirts are coming along! Not everyone is finished yet, but here is a look at a few of the ones that are finished!
Thursday this week we are having a welcome back BBQ from 4:30-6:30pm. The classrooms will be open between 5 and 7 for you to come in and see our room, and get a chance to talk with me! If you are unable to make it Thursday evening, or you would like a scheduled time to sit down and discuss and questions or concerns on Friday, please fill out the pink form that went home today and send it back to school!
Hope to see you all Thursday and Friday! |
