This morning we had an opportunity to go into the garden and help pull out the weeds that are taking over! It was a great way to review science from June, about how seeds travel, and we even learned that most weeds that we have now, were actually brought to Canada by early settlers because at that point in time they served a purpose for them - like the swine thistle, which was initially intended to be food for pigs! Students were having a blast digging in the garden, and pulling out some pretty big weeds with even bigger roots!
After finishing our Bio Poems we moved into writing a small moment. This turned out to be very challenging as many of us are used to writing entire stories! The small moment was supposed to be anywhere from 10 seconds to a minute in time stretched out into a detailed paragraph. The paragraph should be descriptive to paint a picture for the reader. Can you guess what was happening in this moment? We are now starting a small book study. We haven't opened the book, but we are discussing what the book may be about, where it might take place, and questions we have about the book just from looking at the cover. Ask students to share some of their thoughts and questions with you. We are all looking forward to reading it!
This week was busy preparing for the school opening liturgy on Wednesday! Thank you to all parents who came out to join us. We also had a presentation from the school nurse this morning, who was explaining about the vaccinations students will be getting - the first round two weeks from today!
In LA this week we have been working on writing a small moment, a period of about a minute or less in time, that is stretched out into a descriptive paragraph for the reader. We will hopefully be finishing them next week and getting them on the wall for everyone to read! Math we worked a lot on rounding, and practiced rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand and ten thousand. This skill helps with estimating sums or differences if students can correctly round. Social we started looking at an overview of the six regions of Canada. We found out that we live in the Interior Plains, and will be learning more about each region as the unit progresses. In Science we have been learning how to correctly read a thermometer - which as we found out can be very tricky when it comes to temperatures below zero. Lastly, the photo below is our latest art project, that lends to the community we are building in our classroom! Here we are with week two done! The posts here on the blog will become more frequent as we settle into our routines and get further into curriculum.
This week we explored place value to the millions in math, had our first music class, first fire drill and have been working on finishing our social maps and bio poems. The poems are almost complete, and will be on the wall when you come to "meet the teacher" next week. I am really looking forward to meet the teacher this year, as I feel like I have an advantage knowing a lot of you already! We started science this week and have been charting the weather and learning about temperature. Students will be asked to record the weather this weekend if they can remember. Also coming home this weekend will be Social Maps and poems if they are not finished as we will be moving on next week! I know I say quite often that time seems to fly, and this week is no exception! I have had a great first week with everyone and I hope you have too. We have started math, exploring numbers up to 100 000, and looking at how many tens are in the number 10000 for example. We have been working on writing bio poems which I am really excited about! Students have really risen to the level of detail I am asking them to have, and hopefully we will have finished products next week! We started Social Studies with making a map of Canada and labeling all the provinces and their capitals. We also have been working on our first art project! Grade 5 will have their work in the front showcase for September, so next week look out for all your Picasso's in the front case!
