Next week we will be learning how to add decimals together!
In math we have started learning about decimals, and how fractions are related. We have started simple, for example 3/10 = 0.3 and 9/10 = 0.9, and moved a little bit more tricky with questions like 5/100 = 0.05.
Next week we will be learning how to add decimals together! We are finishing up our tree planter job advertisements! I am looking forward to seeing the students convince me to work for their company starting Monday!
Yesterday marked the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday. In class we have been talking about what this means and why it is important. I have encouraged students, rather than give something up, to make a lenten promise of what they can do more, what actions they can do, that would make them be more like Jesus and walk in his footsteps. Things like, saying one kind thing each day, playing with someone who is alone are all things that are manageable for them and that can mean a lot to someone else.
We were very fortunate to have Pulse at the school today, helping us all in our faith journey. It has been a great day full of music and wonderful messages of how God loves us, and how we should love one another.
We will be doing our second social presentation of the year the week of February 23. We have been learning about Alberta's natural resources and students have created a job advertisement for tree planters. They have created their company, decided how much to pay employees along with any benefits and the qualities they want their workers to have.
Students are currently working on their good copies here at school, but will be presenting, or "selling" their company to the class at the end of February. They are supposed to convince all of us to want to work for them! All they will need to do at home, is practice presenting and convincing you to work for them! What can I say other than WOW! I was told the food drive was competitive, but I had no idea what I was getting into! Thank you thank you thank you to all the families who donated food items or money. All together the school sent off over 9000 items to the veterans! What an amazing accomplishment!
Grade 4 came in 4th place with a total of 1304 items! Amazing work! We may not have won the "prize," but it is important to remember that the real winners are the Veterans thanks you your generosity. While we are dreaming of spring, we decided to mix mediums and use paint and crayons to create this beautiful winter day.
In math we have been learning about fractions of a set. This can be tricky, but most seem to have a good handle on it!
The denominator of the fractions tells us how many groups or "cookies" we need, the total is how many "chocolate chips" we have to sprinkle evenly on the cookies, and the numerator tells us how many cookies we need to put on plates, to give us the answer of the total number of chocolate chips on the plates. Learning this sure made me hungry! Today we had a lesson about crumpling a piece of paper. Please ask students to explain the lesson to you, as I really hope they understood the meaning.
The paper started new and clean with no marks on it. We crumpled it and stepped on it, but once we tried to smooth it out, we found it couldn't be done, and the marks could not be removed. This is what happens when we say words or do things that hurt other peoples feelings. We can't take back what we have said, and we can't make their page new again as the mark has already been made. |
