I found a few visuals that you might find helpful! Happy studying!
We have been working very hard on multiplication, and will be having a test next Wednesday, November 4th. Students should make sure to review their basic facts, as well as the process. The test will include numerical questions as well as some word problems for them to apply their knowledge.
I found a few visuals that you might find helpful! Happy studying! Our first round of social projects is almost complete! Students have been working very hard this week to complete their padlet pages, brochures, postcards or iMovies. If students are not finished tomorrow, they will be able to work on them at home this weekend. I would like them all to be completed by Tuesday November 3, so we can start learning about the next region next week!
We were lucky to have Mrs. Bartel in this week, helping us with some more Picasso portraits! The idea of this art was for half of the face to be drawn from the side view, and the other half from the front view! We have one more step to finish next week before they are completely done, but they are coming together!
Today we made wind vanes! The process itself was fairly simple, understanding them on the other hand wasn't as easy. It took some trial and error, some discussion, and finally some google, before we confirmed that the arrow is pointing the direction the wind is coming from. I think we all learned something today!
We are practicing two digit by two digit multiplication now. This can be a confusing process for many. https://ca.ixl.com/signin/meldoyle has many questions to practice, C12, C13 & C14 under grade 5 are all great starting places for extra practice. If students have forgotten their username or password please let me know!
If you are helping your child practice at home, at school we have been practicing multiplying the ones 0x1, and then the ones by tens, 0x2. Students then place a zero below and move onto the tens by ones, 4x1 and finally the tens by tens, 4x2. Students should have also brought home their LA this week to share our latest writing assignment with you. We are working on two truths and a lie, three paragraphs about themselves, two of which are true, one of which is not. Their goal is to write three convincing paragraphs, to see if the class can spot the lie.
Some things that we have been noticing lately that all students need to work on, is their sentence structure and conventions. Students should be spelling familiar words correctly, and unfamiliar words phonetically. They should also be using capitals and periods in the right way. Lastly, in order to be convincing in their paragraph, they simply must add detail. Students can not convey the message in two or three sentences. These are all things that you can be looking out for at home! Students should have brought home the following pages in their duotang this week. Their job was to share the project with you, and look over the rubric. This is a large project, as it will probably take us until Christmas to get through each region. They have 5 regions to research, and 5 possible projects to choose from for each region.
We are beginning our next unit in LA, we are reading Maniac Magee. Out of this book will come many writing assignments that correspond, and will hopefully be fun and engaging for students.
The research process has begun! Students were broken up into groups, each group researching about one of the 5 remaining regions. They are starting by looking for information about the region in their text book as well as supplementary texts about the physical features, climate, natural resources, attractions and people. Once they have finished their research they will start working on their projects!
Our rocks are complete! Each student decorated one to symbolize themselves, and then I also painted a class rock for everyone to put their names on! The rocks will be displayed in the classroom for the year as a reminder of the foundation we are building.
