For Religion, students have to finish the year by submitting a final project. Students are demonstrating their understanding of the sacraments of Baptism, First Communion and Confirmation, and why these three sacraments are considered sacraments of initiation. The below project description should have come home last week and been seen by all parents. Students were given time this week at school to work on it, and will also be given time next week. After that, it is the students responsibility to finish their project at home.
We have had to put Science to the back burner this week, as we have been waiting for some supplies to arrive! Next week we will be building our very own electric powered cars! Something to look forward to!
In Social we have finished our projects on the Famous Five. Students learned how instrumental these women were in helping change the rights for women in Canada. We did an experiment last Friday where we had to assign students to different jobs, such as librarian, construction worker, pilot and hair dresser. We discovered that while we know that anyone can be anything they want, we still associate certain jobs with certain genders. The librarian and hair dresser for example were all girl names. This brought up a lot of other topics, like why we think boys shouldn't wear pink, or that girls should do more girly sports like dance. We generated a list of these kinds of biased notions, and students are now creating a commercial to convince people to change their minds! Ask your students about their chosen topic!
This week in Math we started looking at how to transform shapes. We started learning about translations or slides, and reflections or flips. While the concept is not too difficult, making sure we have drawn the shapes properly is!
Before we start our story writing unit, we are spending a couple weeks working on Analyzing. We are reading a book about spiders (students are really excited, I'm sure you have heard.... :P) and thinking about the facts that are presented in the book, analyzing what we read and whether or not our questions about spiders get answered throughout!
This week we experimented with Conductors and Insulators. We found that most objects made of metal are great conductors, and other items made of plastic, wood or rubber do not conduct electricity - probably why electrical cords are covered in rubber!
We spent the week finishing up our projects on the Famous Five this week! Some groups recorded interviews in front of the green screen, others created a slides presentation or a photo story. We will start sharing the presentations with the class next week! In math we have been finishing our Measurement unit! We finished off the week with some review questions of Area and Perimeter before our quiz on Tuesday. Some of the questions we practiced this week were tricky - I even made a mistake on one!
Today your child came home with their progress report. Please celebrate all the new things your child has learned and the progress they have made so far this year! I am looking forward to all the learning still to come the rest of the year.
Please remember that on your child's progress report, a mark of "AC" indicates that he/she is performing at grade level for this time of year and there is no cause for concern. As the material has increased in difficulty and the expectations have risen since last term, a mark of AC means they have been keeping up with the increase. Please also keep in mind that NY is not "failing," as I remind the students regularly, it simply means they still have work left to do on that particular topic or subject. Looking forward to meeting with all of you next week at interviews! This week we learned how to play D minor! We played a couple recognizable camp songs with this chord, like My Paddle.
