In Social we have finished our projects on the Famous Five. Students learned how instrumental these women were in helping change the rights for women in Canada. We did an experiment last Friday where we had to assign students to different jobs, such as librarian, construction worker, pilot and hair dresser. We discovered that while we know that anyone can be anything they want, we still associate certain jobs with certain genders. The librarian and hair dresser for example were all girl names. This brought up a lot of other topics, like why we think boys shouldn't wear pink, or that girls should do more girly sports like dance. We generated a list of these kinds of biased notions, and students are now creating a commercial to convince people to change their minds! Ask your students about their chosen topic!
