The Grade 5 religion exam is coming up at the end of next week. To go along with that, students have to complete a religion project to demonstrate their learning. We are doing our project on the Sacraments of Initiation. Students have brought home a page outlining the project to discuss with you, along with a timeline of work for it. Students will be given time in class next week, but should bring any materials to school that they might need. The following week, if the project is not done, it will be completed at home and finally due on June 10.
To finish our Electricity unit students are creating a mind map of the things they have learned in this unit. It should include all of the following elements:
-recognize dangers involved in using sources of electrical currents -describe/demonstrate that electricity can be used to create a magnet -conductors vs. insulators -electricity in our homes is measured in kW/hour -draw and label circuits using different materials (like switches) -series vs. parallel circuit - what happens to the lightbulb? -how can you reduce your electrical footprint? -How would you construct a burglar alarm in a house using a simple circuit? Some works in progress below! This term in art we are focusing on creating pieces with perspective. We created some pieces with Mrs. Bartel, and now our latest art project is combining perspective with all the art that we have done this year! We are creating a gallery, like the ones in the pictures below - however all the pictures that hang in the students galleries, will be pictures of art they have created this year! You can see the work in progress below.
In math we have been learning about way to describe shapes. We have learned about parallel and perpendicular lines and sides that are the same length.
We have been learning about the Famous Five and how they contributed to Canada's Identity. Students spent the last couple weeks researching one of the famous five, and then creating a life size rendering of what she would have looked like! They are finally complete!
Over the last few days in LA we have been working on story writing, and things that can help make our writing better.
We first talked about dialogue, and how to use the quotation marks and commas appropriately, and how to paragraph dialogue instead of having it be one big paragraph. We also talked about how a writer can use too much dialogue and the story is lost. Dialogue is like salt - a little bit gives the story flavor, but too much can ruin it completely. This week we started working on our project on the Famous Five. Students are creating a life size version of one of the women, starting by tracing themselves, and then turning it into a person! The pictures may be hard to see so far, as we have just been drawing with pencil to start.
This week is Emergency Preparedness Week and we were sent materials from The City of Calgary to walk us through activities involving being prepared for emergency situations. We did some activities in school, and there is a portion for you do work through at home with your child! This week especially, it was extra apparent why having an emergency plan is hopefully never necessary, but may need to be utilized.
We have Gail Bartel with us this week! Yesterday and today we have been working on perspective pieces. Here is the works in progress!
