We had another amazing year for the food drive! Our class alone brought in 883 items! What an amazing accomplishment! Together, our school brought in 8 066 food items! And with St. Vincent's participation, together we brought in 14, 510 food items for our Veterans! Our class and Mr. Lee's class can't wait to go to the Calgary Poppy Fund next week to help sort the food and pack hampers! The truck loaded up this morning and is off to St. Vincent to collect their food next!
We have been learning about acids and bases, and today we experimented with different liquids and litmus paper, to see if there was a color change! The pictures below are of vinegar - the red litmus paper stayed red, and the blue litmus paper turned red indicating that it is an acid!
In science we have been learning about water and the properties about it that makes it different than other liquids. Water is unique because of the skin that forms on the top due to the surface tension. Today we experimented with a full cup of water and slowly added pennies to see how many we could add before it over flowed. Believe it or not, we added 63 pennies! Can you see the dome shape that the skin of the water has created?
We are putting the final touches on our homelessness presentations this week and are getting ready to present them next week!
Students finished their comics about the parts of the mass. Hopefully doing this assignment helped them remember and recognize the different parts!
Students are having a science quiz on Monday. They will be given a mixture, something like corn kernels, sand and salt, and they will have to write down how they would separate all of those solids into three separate containers. They can use any of the techniques we have been learning about or a combination of some as well! They should have diagrams of the following ways to separate things in their duotang. Separating SolidsSeparating Solids & LiquidsSeparating LiquidsIn math we have been working on adding and subtracting decimals. While it does not sound too complicated (other than remembering to line up the decimal), it does require us to remember how to add and subtract from the beginning of the year! If you are giving students questions at home to practice, please make sure they are questions that involve regrouping!
To continue on our theme in art of realistic drawing using pencil, we are combining what we have been learning about in Religion for our latest project. We have been focusing on the parts of the mass and so we are creating a comic strip about all the parts! Students are drawing realistic people to illustrate each part, creating art, as well as hopefully helping them remember the order of the parts! There are no completed pieces yet, so for now, enjoy the attempt I made on the white board! (It is surprisingly hard to draw with a dry erase marker...)
