We have started our book club unit! Each student has been placed in a group reading one of 4 books. Students have started discussing what they think the book is going to be about just by looking at the front covers, as well as what questions they have about the books. Each story is an adventure story, and at different points in this unit, students will be asked to share with others who are not in their group about the book they are studying.
Since we have started working on fractions, here is a great website to practice some of the things we are learning in school!
http://www.visualfractions.com/Games.htm In preparation for tomorrow's Pink Night, we talked about stress this morning and how it can make us feel. Stress, or something we are worried about might give us a headache, give us shaky legs or even butterflies in our stomach. Stress might make us feel mad, sad or even scared. We talked about how we can deal with stress, by something as simple as deep breaths, or talking to a trusted adult.
This morning we built catapults! We learned about the trebuchet, the ballista and the mangonel and experimented with models of them to decide what class of lever they were. Students also built their own catapults! I apologize in advance for the things that start flying around your homes! :)
We finished talking about personal safety today with Internet safety. We talked about never sharing personal information with people online, and how people you meet online are not your friends. You should only be friends with people you know in real life.
We wrote our multiplication and division test this morning, and I was able to go over them all. Students are bringing them home to be signed and returned today.
I explained to the students that all the questions on this test, were questions that I expect them to know. They are all things they should be able to do by the end of the unit, so because it is expected, even if they got them all right, it is an AC. This doesn't mean that they did badly on the test, it simply means that for multiplication and division, they know exactly what they are supposed to and have a good base for moving forward to grade 5 next year! We finished all our social presentations today! I was very pleased and impressed at how easily students got up and presented in front of their peers, even though they may have been nervous about it. A job well done!
We have started our introduction to fractions! We have been exploring how all fractions are parts of a whole, and how the denominator tells us how many pieces in total, and the numerator tells us how many pieces we are dealing with.
The first rule of fractions that will help students figure them out, is the bigger the denominator, the smaller the pieces! :) We had Dare to Care at school today teaching the students about lots of great ways to make the school a better place. HA HA SO are all the ways students can help themselves if they are feeling like they are being bullied. Students created skits and acted out the various strategies. Ask them all about it!
We have finished with levers and are now learning about wheels and axles! Like the lever, a wheel helps make our work easier. Today we explored how a roller is different from a wheel and axle.
