We finished reading The Witches today. Students really enjoyed the book! It ends in such a way that you are still left with a few questions as to whether or not they succeed in getting rid of all of the witches in the world, so we have decided to write our own sequel! We are working on our rough copies over the next little while, and will be spending some time in the computer lab once we are done writing, "publishing" our book. When they are all completed, we will display them in the library for other students to read!
Our social studies art is close to completion! Students used pastels to color the process of how fossil fuels are formed. Now to just find a spot to hang them!
We have been working on our multiplication facts at school, but below are a couple great sites to help students practice at home that don't really seem like "homework!" Multiplication.com This site is full of games, where students get to play after they have answered all the fact questions. http://www.multiplication.com/games/all-games Cross the Swamp
This site has addition and subtraction, as well as multiplication and division. Students have to fill in the equations in order to get the monkey across the swamp! http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/starship/maths/crosstheswamp.shtml Chapter 2 in Social studies has been all about Alberta's fossil heritage. We learned a little bit about fossils, and are now looking into what fossil fuels are and how they are created. We are working on a pastel art project, showing the process! We haven't quite finished them, but this is what the final product will look like!
On Monday we started learning about totem poles in Religion, and how people used the totem poles to tell the stories of their lives and the qualities they value. We are creating our own, along with writing a paragraph explaining why we chose the specific animals we did! Here are a few of the totem poles that are finished already.
We have been learning multiplication, and strategies to help figure out the questions. We haven't touched on the subtraction strategy below yet, but that is to come next week!
Students should be practicing their facts at home, as they are responsible to be able to recall up to 7x7, which means have these facts memorized. If they can remember all the way up to 9x9 this will benefit them greatly for grade 5. After our discussion about fossils yesterday, students got to take a look at the real thing! Thanks to Luke for bringing these in to share with us!
Today we had a little debate in the class over the question "should a person who finds a fossil be allowed to keep it?" Students selected a side, and we debated back and forth with valid points for each side!
For homework I asked students to discuss with you about which side they have chosen, and try to convince you of their side. Tomorrow, we will be writing a paragraph detailing their side, with all the facts or "details" to back it up. Students were coming up with some really good points! I am very interested to read their paragraphs! Our Newspaper Articles have all been printed and put up! Nothing gets past the reporters in here! Look out for Mrs. Robinson! ;)
