In the latest chapters we have read of Maniac Magee, Maniac has run away and is now homeless. He meets a friend named Grayson who is also homeless but has a job. We have been talking about how the meaning of homeless doesn't just mean people who live on the streets. We are using google slides to work on a presentation with a partner on homelessness in Calgary!
We have been experimenting with liquids this week! One experiment that was particularly fun was layering liquids! We experimented with density to layer liquids on top of each other. We found that glycerin (we used syrup) was the heaviest, then water, then oil and rubbing alcohol was the lightest!
Students are going to have a test on Fractions next Friday. It will be on equivalent fractions, as well as comparing and ordering fractions. This week students have been given lots of tools to study, those being:
-http://www.visualfractions.com/Games.htm -www.ixl.com/signin/meldoyle More specifically, Grade 5: I.1, I.3, I.4, I.7, I.9,I.10 & I.11 -Pages 55-59 in their math workbook review these concepts -Page 60 of workbook, question 1-5 -Multiple extra practice pages sent home -Math help offered at lunch. Happy studying!! :) The nickname stories have been completed and have been published! Come take a read, as they are all on display on the bulletin board by the gym!
Through the next few chapters of Maniac Magee that we have read, Maniac is able to do the impossible - untie a knot that no one else in town could untie. He starts to bring people together from all over the town, to watch him do what is apparently the undoable! Students each got a string of their own, in an attempt to create their own version of a knot that can not be undone! So far there have been many attempts, and some have come close!
Yesterday we tested how to separate solids through magnets and water! First we tested water separation with sand and saw dust. Water is a good way to separate these two materials because saw dust is significantly lighter than sand, and so it floats!
We then tried to separate popcorn kernels, salt and iron filings. Because we had iron filings and we knew they were magnetic, we figured we could use a magnet to separate it from the other particles! We have been working this week with equivalent fractions - a concept that is trickier than you might think! We are trying to visualize and understand how fractions are related.
In Science we have started Chemistry! This week we have been learning about the three different states of matter, and exploring how to mix solids, and how to separate them. This week we learned about a sieve, and how to effectively use it to separate solids. Next week we will look at water and magnetic separation!
