In Science we have moved on to our last unit - Plant Growth and Changes. We started by looking at a lima bean, we soaked it in water so it would easily come apart, to see the three main parts of the seed. Ask students about the purpose of each! If you look closely, you can see the part that will become the root, and the tiny leaf that will become the stem.
We have started to discuss what happened to Alberta after the Fur Trade was over. Beaver pelt hats went out of style and the business slowed. New people moved out west to settle in farms, but the government had some work to do first with the First Nations people who lived on the land. We discussed today about the treaties that were signed. Ask students what the word treaty means.
We have been working on multiplying large numbers. We have just recently moved up to a three digit number, multiplied by a one digit number. Remember to keep practicing those basic facts at home! ixl.com has a lot of great multiplication practice questions. D3 & 4 on level F more specifically deals with these larger numbers!
The students were really excited to share their learning with the rest of the school! While it made for a busy day giving classes a chance to come through, I think everyone learned something! I was told even grade 1 students were telling each other not to throw paper in the garbage after visiting our garbage fair. Every little bit helps!
Thank you to all the parents who came out for our volunteer tea! We appreciate everything you do for our school community! The students were all excited to perform their camping songs for you!
We had a great time at the Lougheed House on Monday! We learned a lot about metis culture and even had an opportunity to tie in art and do some sketching of the old architecture!
All of the projects students took on were ideas that they decided to take on and were passionate about. I am so pleased at the way they turned out and at the dedication and thought that went into them. Students really took responsibility for their learning to end our Waste in Our World Unit. These are only a few of the 12 projects we have in our classroom!
Mrs. Bartel is here again this week to do art projects with all the students. We spent yesterday and today working on these symmetrical butterflies, to tie in our geometry unit in math!
In math we have started Geometry. We have been looking at 3D shapes and the nets that form them! Students enjoyed constructing their own!
