We have been working hard this week growing crystals! Our sugar crystals have started to form, and are growing bigger every day. We are writing a science report on the process of growing sugar crystals on our google drive. We also tried this week growing crystals using alum as it is supposed to be a much faster process. We made our solution yesterday with the hopes of it growing on the pipe cleaner. Instead, the crystal formed on the bottom of the glass and was able to be removed!
We have been looking at quotations from the novel, Maniac Magee, and writing paragraphs about them. There are two important pieces to a paragraph, the context - or what is going on when the quotation is said, and the significance - or why the quotation is so important in the grand scheme of the book. Here are two examples that we worked on together.
In Social this week we have been focusing on how Canada's Identity has changed over time. We started with confederation and looking at how Canada slowly became over time what it is today, and the cause for Confederation (uniting the colonies). We also started talking about World War 1 and how that changed life for people in Canada, not only the people who went off to war, but the women left behind to fill in their jobs.
This week in math we have been further exploring volume and moved from cm cubed to m cubed, so it felt only natural that we should build a meter cubed!
We spent a lot of time on area and perimeter this week in hopes that students feel 100% confident with it and won't get confused. First we looked at shapes with the same perimeter but different areas, and then at shapes with the same area but different perimeters.
We are attempting to make crystals in class! They are made just with hot water, sugar and food coloring, so in theory if they grow they can be eaten after! We are leaving them for a few weeks as it is not a quick process. Hopefully they grow! The sugar has settled a bit, but hopefully the solution is saturated enough for them to form.
This week we spent some time exploring some chemistry websites. Students have the list on a google doc, but you can also access them here.

While the race was close, and we only lost by a little bit, we had to pay up! Here is the poem that we wrote today for them.
A challenge you proposed, A win we thought we could get, The week was full of ups and downs, But turns out you won the bet. We started out small, You seemed always in the lead, We came back with a vengeance, But in the end you were the ones to succeed. Now we write this poem, To tell you how great you are, You were a great opponent, Turns out your class is the real star. You put up a great fight, You brought in a ton of food, You beat us fair and square, But the Veterans are the ones in a great mood. Sincerely, 5M This week we worked on a summary of Maniac Magee so far. We have read two parts and were taking a look back at the story so far. We had some challenges with the summary, some people not writing enough, and some way too much. We discussed how a summary should touch on all the main events so far but doesn't need to go into detail about every single one. We also talked about conventions - this is something a lot of us need to work on (capitals and periods).
We spent the week finishing up our Lent brochures. Students had to create a brochure describing the three main themes of Lent, prayer, fasting and alms giving. They are turning out to be quite the works of art!
