We have almost finished learning about the Regions of Canada, with the Cordillera being out last region. We have just started the Cordillera this week and are hoping to be finished all the regions by the 15th! Students have been doing a great job on their projects, and hopefully have taken something away about the regions that they will remember for a while!
This week we have been growing crystals in science! We used hot water and borax and so far this is what has happened!
Our New Years Goals are finally finished and up on the wall! If you are around the school, come check out the goals students have for this year! As the title says, "dream big, set goals, take action!"
This week we experimented with surface tension in water, and added pennies to a cup of water to see the water rise before overflowing over the edge of the cup! I think we were able to put 53 pennies into the cup if I remember correctly!
In Language Arts Maniac is successfully able to untie Cobbles Knot, a knot that no one else was ever able to untie. We have started our own Cobbles Corner in the classroom with knots to try to untie!
This week in Language Arts we have been talking about goals for the New Year. These goals are things that the students want to accomplish, and are things that they can work towards in 2017. We are working on turning these into paragraphs with why they are a goal, and how they will accomplish them!
We have started our fractions unit this week, and started learning about equivalent fractions. The below picture, while the three fractions have different numbers, they are all showing the same amount of pizza!
In Science we have been experimenting with mixing liquids! Some mix together and others don't. We learned that these liquids probably have different densities.
We have been working this week on a writing assignment for the North Pole! Santa has some opening for a variety of different positions that are currently open. We have been working on a letter explaining why they are the best person for the job including any experience they have had in the area, and next week will be doing an "interview" with me in the class as their first small presentation of the year. Hopefully Santa will hire them all! Although if the North Pole is as cold as it has been this week, I don't think I would want to go.
This week we have been learning about separating solids and liquids. We did a lemon juice experiment and are currently waiting for evaporation to work (although we may be waiting a while). We also explored decanting and filtering as another means to separate solids and liquids.
