We have finished addition, and are now moving on to subtraction. Here are the different strategies that students learned! While it is important to be familiar with all different ways, most students have picked one that they are most comfortable with using.
Two math pages came home today to be signed and returned. The first one was students practicing their 4 digit addition. I wrote comments on the page for students. You may read something like "great use of all the strategies" where students have shown me they clearly understand different ways of adding. You may read "Can you use any other strategies" if students have stuck to their comfort zone and only used one strategy, like regrouping, throughout.
The second page students were asked t answer one addition question and then explain their thinking. In math it is not only important to find the answer, but to be able to explain what we have done to show we have a good understanding of the process. This is where I was looking for higher level thinking from the students! If you have any questions about what you see, please let me know! Today we learned three more strategies.
3. Shout No! Run - Tell Someone If someone asks you to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable or scared, you should shout "NO!" and run and tell a trusted adult. 4. Trust your instincts We talked about how we all have instincts or feelings we get in different situations, and we should listen to them! If we feel danger or something is not right, we should pay attention to those feelings and go find a trusted adult. 5. Dignity and respect We talked a lot about students recognizing their own self-worth and how they should expect to be treated well. If they are not being treated this way, they should again tell a trusted adult. Two more strategies to come tomorrow! Today we finished our last refraction experiment. We placed a coin in a container, and stood back to where we were no longer able to see the coin. Once water was added to the cup, suddenly we could see it again! I wonder why that happened... :)
In health we are learning about personal safety and strategies we can use to help stay safe. There are 7 strategies we will be learning, and the first two we talked about today were:
1. If asked to share and your parents aren't aware, say NO! This strategy means what it says. If students are asked to give out personal information and their parents don't know about it, they shouldn't be giving it. 2. Buddy system This reminds students that there is safety in numbers and not to travel anywhere alone. It is important for students to know how to keep themselves safe, and where they can find a trusted adult. I am certain you all do this at home, but it is good for them to have another reminder! Today we did our second refraction experiment! Students drew an arrow on a piece of paper, and put it behind the cup slowly to see what happened. We found that it was called the "Turning Arrow Experiment" for a reason!
Students have a science project to work on this week. They have brought home a page that looks like this: On the page students must have the definition of each word somewhere in the section, and then pictures that belong in each category. They can be pictures cut from magazines, printed from the computer, or even hand drawn! The point is to be able to categorize items as
We have been doing a lot of writing lately, our ideas inspired by The Witches. If you get a chance, pop in and read what the students have written!
We have started learning about refraction (or the bending of light) through a few science experiments! This week we tried the bending pencil experiment, and found that if you put a pencil in a cup of water, it looks "broken." We have been discussing why this happens! See if the students can explain it to you! We have two more refraction experiments to come next week.
